Awarded Grants

  • Offshore Islands Conservation Project. Prepared a grant to Organization of American States (OAS) to secure funding for four years for all the activities involved in the international Antiguan Racer Conservation Project. Funding included two full-time salaried positions for Education Officer and Field Officer for the project, all conservation and management materials and transportation to offshore islands, summer internships, as well as all aspects of environmental education for all primary and secondary schools present in the country of Antigua and Barbuda.
  • Floating Classroom. Prepared annual grants to International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) to secure a year's worth of environmental education materials and transportation costs for the Environmental Awareness Group and Antiguan Racer Conservation Project.

Education and Outreach Materials

In addition to the education and outreach materials listed below under project management, the work for the Environmental Awareness Group, Antigua and Barbuda, included the creation of numerous press releases, bi-annual newsletters, brochures, fundraising materials and letters, signage for field trips and ecologically sensitive areas, council meeting minutes, and membership packages.

Project Management

Information Officer

Environmental Awareness Group, U.S. Peace Corps, Antigua and Barbuda, West Indies 2001 – 2003

Completed a specified classification system, self-taught how to use WINISIS software, created a computerized library database with WINISIS, catalogued 1500 books, project reports, maps, journals, and various other publications, wrote Library Database Manual, trained staff and council members on library database usage, and assisted teachers and students with information gathering.

Youth Development Officer

Environmental Awareness Group, U.S. Peace Corps, Antigua and Barbuda, West Indies 2001 – 2003

Founded a youth group for teenagers, coordinated and instructed weekly meetings, organized field trips, encouraged involvement in ongoing environmental projects, facilitated two summer nature camps (2002, 2003), involved members in writing articles for newsletters, and provided structure and strategic planning for senior members to work on long-term sustainability of the youth group.

Wildlife Biologist

Antiguan Racer Conservation Project, Environmental Awareness Group, U.S. Peace Corps, St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, West Indies, 2002 - 2003

Led biweekly radiotracking trips to monitor reintroduced Antiguan Racer Snakes on an offshore island, recorded data and wrote per visit reports on movement and habitat analyses, trained other volunteers and the newly hired field officer in radio telemetry, GPS, habitat monitoring, trail maintenance, snake handling, data recording, field techniques, and writing technical reports. Field work also included participating in invasive species monitoring and two annual snake censuses.

Environmental Educator

Antiguan Racer Conservation Project, Environmental Awareness Group, U.S. Peace Corps, St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, West Indies, 2002 - 2003

Taught 500+ primary school students and 200+ secondary school students about endangered species, marine and coastal habitats, and human use and disturbance of fragile ecosystems. Prepared education material and Teaching Tools documents for in-class follow-up, and facilitated workshops and school visits.

Communication and People Skills

Organization Representative

Environmental Awareness Group, U.S. Peace Corps, Antigua and Barbuda, West Indies 2001 – 2003

Help numerous meetings with governmental Ministries (Ministry of Tourism and the Environment, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Education) on behalf of the Environmental Awareness Group to ensure the establishment of a new National Protected Area to protect endemic and endangered/threatened species inhabiting specific off-shore islands. Also held numerous meetings with wealthy landowners who owned property both on the mainland and offshore on behalf of the Environmental Awareness Group to develop management plans of sensitive properties, wetlands, and lagoons to ensure the protection of endangered and threatened species.

Advisor and Administrative Assistant

Counseling and Advising Office, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, 1997 – 2001

Advised students and faculty advisors on college requirements, policies, and procedures, referred students and faculty to other campus and community resources, compiled and verified academic information for weekly faculty Petitions Committee meetings, updated academic records in computer and paper files, wrote correspondence for staff to students and faculty, summarized semester minutes into annual report, and updated advising materials.

Student Representative Board Member

Academic Integrity Board, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, 1999 – 2000

Participated in academic integrity hearings regarding students accused of plagiarism or cheating on exams, and collaborated with other student representatives and professors on decisions.

Teacher’s Assistant

Supervised field trips, led flora and fauna identification classes, maintained teaching specimens, created examination questions, graded exams, and tutored students.

HIV/AIDS Peer Instructor

Taught HIV/AIDS education and awareness in high school health classes, special functions, and at regional school curriculum meetings. Participated in Red Cross training of new volunteer instructors.

Other Involvement
Invasive Species Control Project
Funded by Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust for the Antiguan Racer Conservation Project, June 2006 - July 2006
Participated and helped organize local volunteers to cut grids and place poisonous bait to eradicate rats on an offshore island to preserve the habitat for threatened and endangered species.
